Why use condoms
Do you use a condom during sex? That reduces your risk of getting an STI or passing it on to someone else. Use them with clients but also outside your work. That reduces the risk of passing an STI on to each other.
Condoms also protect you from getting pregnant.
Condoms do not offer 100% protection. That’s why it is a good idea to also protect yourself against STIs and pregnancy in other ways:
- Get an STI test twice a year. Then you will know for sure whether you have an STI or not
- Also use something else to avoid getting pregnant. The pill, for example, or an IUD or hormone patches
Which condom
Condoms come in all shapes and sizes. And the quality can differ. What do you look out for when looking for and using condoms?
Sizes
Condoms come in all sizes. From narrow to wide and from long to short. It is useful to have different sizes of condoms before you have sex. You can estimate what size you need for a client.
Types
There are various types of condoms:
- Stronger material: for some positions or during long, rough or anal sex
- Use lube. Condoms with lube make it easier to enter the vagina or anus. Always use a condom with lube for your work.
- Do you want a different sensation? Use a condom with bumps or ridges or one that gives off heat or a tingling sensation. Some clients like that
- Femidom: is made of synthetic material with two rubber rings. You can use the condom if your client’s penis does not get hard or if it is smaller. You put the smallest ring deep in your vagina. The condoms traps the sperm. Read more about the femidom at sense.info
Which condom is the best?
Which condom is the best one for you depends on what you like. When buying condoms, pay attention to:
- Choose a good quality condom. Make sure there is a CE logo on the packaging. That means the condom is okay to use
- Check to find out how long you can use the condom. The expiry date is on the packaging. Do not use it after that date
- Preferably, you should store your condoms in a cool, dark place. This could be in a cabinet next to your bed or where you work

Using condoms
It's nice if you can put on a condom quickly and easily. Use your hands or your mouth. That makes it easier and faster for you to work. Remember before, during and after sex:
Before sex
- Make sure that you already have one or a few condoms. It’s easier to grab one that way. You can open the packaging beforehand
- Determine before sex what size you think you’ll need. Are you using the correct size? That will make is less likely that the condom slips off or tears during sex
- Do you not have a lot of experience putting a condom on? Practice doing it a few times, using a dildo, for example
During sex
- Roll the condom down carefully. Do you have long nails? Make sure that the condom doesn’t break
- Change the condom every 15 minutes or more often if you are going to do something else, like switching from vaginal sex to anal sex, or from vaginal sex to oral sex.
- Do you use lube? Choose a lube based on water or silicon. That will keep the condom from breaking. And it feels better. Read more about lube
- Do not use any oil-based products when using a condom. Body cream or massage oil will cause the condom to break
- During sex, check every now and then to see whether the condom is still on correctly. Is it sliding off? In that case, use a new condom

After sex
Did your client orgasm? In that case, the penis will soften and the condom can slip off easier. And that could lead to sperm still getting into your vagina or anus. Help your client by using your hand to slowly remove the penis from your vagina or anus. That way you can make sure the condom stays on the penis.
Putting on a condom using your mouth
Sometimes, clients like it if you put the condom on using your mouth. That’s more difficult than using your hands. What do you want to do? It’s a good idea to practice this beforehand using a dildo or with someone you know. This is how you do that:
- Take the front tip of the condom into your mouth. Hold it tight between your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Don’t do this using your teeth: the condom can break
- Move your mouth to the head of the hard penis. The condom is in your mouth
- Let the tip go and use your lips to push the edge of the condom down a bit. Now, roll the condom further down using your mouth
- Now you can also use your hands. It’s not always easy to roll the condom all the way down over the penis using your mouth
Broken condom
Did the condom break or slip off during sex? In that case, you can get an STI. You can also get pregnant. What do you do if this happens?
- Go pee and empty your bladder
- Wash your vagina using lukewarm water
- Get an STI test two weeks later
- Do you have complaints before that which could be an STI? If you do, go to the doctor and don’t wait two weeks
- Aren’t you using anything to prevent pregnancy? Take the morning-after pill as soon as possible. Read more about the morning-after pill
Condom broke? Get an STI test
Did your condom break or slip off? In that case, you might have an STI. Get an STI test at the municipal health service (GGD) or at your doctor’s office. Then you will know for sure whether you have an STI. You will get medicine immediately if necessary.
No condom
Some clients prefer not to use a condom during vaginal or anal sex or during oral sex. Sometimes they are willing to pay more for that. It can be hard to negotiate about this. If you say no, it could cost you money or make your client difficult or unsatisfied. However, sex without a condom involves risks:
- You could catch an STI and give it to someone else. This could be other clients or maybe your own partner
- An STI can make you sick. Sometimes, you won’t be able to work for a while. Or earn any money.
- You can get pregnant
Think about what you would want to do in that situation. Also think about how to discuss it with your client. You can make putting the condom on more fun, for example by using your mouth to do it. You can also tell your client before sex that you only have sex if they use a condom, and you can also put that in your ad.
Blow job without a condom?
You can also get an STI by giving a blow job without using a condom. It’s better not to do that. Do you still want to give a blow job without a condom? In that case, please note:
- Don’t take the penis too far into your throat
- Don’t put your penis too far into a client’s throat
- Make sure you don’t get any sperm in your mouth
